Mirrorless cameras have become more and more popular in the current market. Many camera manufacturers like Sony, Fuji, Olympus, Leica, and others had put in effort into research and developed some excellent Mirrorless cameras. So let’s see how a Mirrorless camera fits you the best.
1. Large Image Sensor in Smaller Camera Size
In general, a Mirrorless camera is equipped with a Micro 4/3, APS-C, or Full-Frame image sensor. These sensors are much larger than the typical image sensor (1/2.3″) provided in the P&S. You may read my 5 Factors Affected By Image Sensor Size to get more details regarding the image sensor size.
Although the DSLR camera is also equipped with either APS-C or Full-Frame image sensor, the Mirrorless camera is much smaller in the camera body design. The Mirrorless camera does not have a mirror reflection board that reflects the light to the optical viewfinder. Therefore, the Mirrorless camera body can be much thinner than the DSLR camera body, resulting in a lighter camera.
2. Better Performance and Full Manual Controls
Generally, a Mirrorless camera has faster autofocus speed, faster shutter speed, better signal-noise level than the P&S. Besides, it can even outperform some entry-level DSLR in terms of performance and image quality.
A Mirrorless camera also allows you to fully manual control the parameters on your camera, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, etc. Full manual controls are rarely seen in P&S because P&S is designed to be easy to use with minimal controls.
3. Interchangeable Lens
What is the most attractive part of a camera to a camera enthusiast? Yea, it is the capability to use different lenses on their camera. Mirrorless cameras not only have their dedicated lenses, but the camera manufacturers also provide the adapter for their Mirrorless cameras to use their DSLR’s range of lenses.
4. Great Travelling Companion
Do you ever hear your friends or someone else complains that “I wish I brought my DSLR with me on the trip there if it is not so bulky” or “Owww carrying the DSLR throughout the trip had hurt my wrist so badly..”? Yes, I always heard my friends complain about it.
Remember, we are traveling, not working. Peoples enjoy themselves on the trip when they travel in a lightweight package. If you pursue the image quality and travel a lot, then the mirrorless camera will be the first choice because it is light, provides high image quality, and is affordable.
5. Bokeh
What is bokeh? In general, bokeh makes your background blur so that your subject has a “pop-up” feel from the background.
The image sensors that are being used in Mirrorless camera are generally much larger than those sensors that are commonly used in the digital P&S (you can refer to my 5 Factors Affected By Image Sensor Size). Therefore, the Mirrorless cameras are capable to produce the bokeh effect while it remains the advantages of smaller size factor. I know it is not quite true that larger size image sensor is easier to produce bokeh effect than smaller size image sensor, but I will explain it in another specific post.
Bottom Line
A Mirrorless camera can provide the same/better image quality as a DSLR while remaining a small and lightweight form factor. It allows you to travel light and draws less attention from others as well. Unless you are willing to pay an extreme price for the full-frame P&S, which costs double or triple to a Mirrorless/DSLR camera. Otherwise, the Mirrorless camera will serve you well and please you enormously.
